Caro leitor,
Não sei se minha tentativa de desaceleração da vida está funcionando ou maio foi de fato um mês muito lento. Mas não estou reclamando. É que eu pensei e vivi tanto esse mês que o tempo dilatou. Li bons livros (incluindo Shakespeare), comecei duas séries ótimas, conversei muito sobre literatura, visitei um dos meus lugares favoritos, fiz 25 anos e escrevi sobre isso. Achei que fazer 25 seria mais desesperador, mas na verdade me sinto bem contente… curiosa para saber o que os “late twenties” aguardam.
Estou num raro momento no qual tenho mais vontade de escrever do que ler, espero aproveitá-lo bem e trazer coisas legais para vocês nas próximas semanas :)

Richard III - William Shakespeare (1592-3)
Shakespeare termina suas Histórias inglesas com Ricardo III — um grand finale digno de uma grande jornada. Essa é uma das muitas peças shakespearianas cujo personagem principal é tão magnífico que ofusca todo o resto, independentemente da qualidade de seu entorno. O corcunda da Torre de Londres domina a linguagem da peça (como Ricardo II) com monólogos que inspiram tanto repulsa quanto simpatia (tenho pena dele quando diz que, se não pode ser amado, então terá poder — isso ecoa o Satã de Milton). Depois de ler e estudar todas as oito peças históricas, posso dizer com confiança que minha obsessão por elas é absolutamente justificada, pois elas são um dos trabalhos mais notáveis da literatura. Confie em mim e leia as Histórias Inglesas!
The Sounds of Poetry - Robert Pinsky (1998)
Li esse livro para um clube de leitura e foi legal, mas um pouco decepcionante. Ainda sou principiante em poesia, e esse livro pretende ensinar o básico de escansão, métrica, ritmo etc. Confesso que não achei tão útil, pois Pinsky explica demais certos conceitos, o que acaba complicando o simples.
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek - Annie Dillard (1974)
Peguei esse livro para ler porque estava com saudade da natureza, já que passo muito tempo enfurnada em um apartamento e em um escritório; era uma forma de descansar a mente e me transportar — e funcionou, pois o livro cumpre esse papel. As imagens que annie tece do bosque de tinker creek são extremamente vivas, imersivas, o leitor sente as estações da forma que ela descreve (sentimos a quietude do inverno, a umidade opressiva do verão, a brisa da primavera) ela é uma excelente escritora nesse aspecto.
O livro se passa no decorrer de um ano, dividido em estações, começando em um inverno e terminando no outro. As descrições das metamorfoses naturais das estações são o ponto forte do livro, e é quando Dillard se aproxima da poesia, pois ela presta uma atenção profunda e minuciosa ao seu entorno em Tinker Creek — é um tipo de atenção que vemos muito mais na poesia do que na narrativa. De uns meses para cá notei que essa questão da atenção tem sido uma preocupação constante pra mim; tenho tentado ser mais observadora, pois é preciso exercitar a escrita o tempo inteiro, e não só no ato de escrever — se vou escrever sobre o que vejo, é preciso estar ativamente vendo, se não não vou ter nada para trazer ao texto. Acho que poucos escritores hoje em dia são observadores como Annie, e é o crédito que dou a ela. Acho que tenho conseguido estar mais “consciente” quando estou me movendo pelo mundo no meu dia a dia. O livro de Annie meio que intensificou esse objetivo que eu já tinha, e achei ela muito inspiradora nesse aspecto.
The Happy Prince and Other Tales - Oscar Wilde (1888)
Seguindo com o meu projeto de leitura cronológica das obras completas de Wilde, em maio foi a vez dessa pequena coletânea de contos de fadas. É difícil dizer algo sobre uma obra de Wilde que não seja: eu amei. É infalível. Meus contos favoritos foram The Happy Prince e The Selfish Giant (ambos me fizeram chorar).
Selected Poems - Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Uma das minhas resoluções de ano novo foi ler mais poesia e aqui estou eu, na segunda coleção de poemas do ano. Coleridge é maravilhoso. Depois de quatro meses na companhia dele é quase como se eu o conhecesse. Normalmente, a poesia romântica não falha em me agradar, especialmente (no caso de Coleridge) os “Hill Walking Poems” — basicamente alguém perambulando pelo campo e contemplando a paisagem (recentemente me recomendaram John Clare já que gosto desse “gênero” poético). Poemas que mais gostei: Work Without Hope, The Eolian Harp, This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison, Reflections of Having Left a Place of Retirement, Christabel, A Stranger Minstrel, The Picture or The Lover’s Resolution, Dejection: An Ode, Hope and Time, Youth and Age, e Ars Poetica.

The Function of Criticism - Helen Vendler
criticism is like civilization for Yeats: ‘all things fall and are built again’ and our pleasure in the building, rather than any immortality in the product, is our motive.
Infelizmente, Helen Vendler faleceu há um mês atrás. Ela era um grande exemplo para mim, acredito que para muitos da comunidade literária, e com certeza continuará sendo. Resolvi trazer um ensaio dela em homenagem. Vendler faz, aqui, uma espécie de defesa da crítica literária, trazendo vários exemplos desde escritores que foram objetos de críticas à críticos propriamente ditos. Ela explica a metamorfose da crítica através dos anos, a qual tradicionalmente consistia na aquisição de conhecimento e um “evangelismo secular” na disseminação do aprendizado. Hoje em dia, o conceito de Matthew Arnold de “divulgar o que de melhor foi pensado ou dito” está obsoleto, por conter subtextos “elitistas” ou “dogmáticos” (ainda assim há controvérsias).
Seria através do estilo da crítica — composto por intenção, temperamento, motivação, convicções, etc. — que podemos descobrir sua função. Portanto, não existiria uma função geral da crítica. Ao longo do texto, Vendler menciona a crítica de autores como Barthes, Ashbery e Bloom para encontrar pontos de intercessão e diferença nessa prática textual. É bem interessante, e com certeza me fez refletir sobre o meu processo de escrita.
This is Water - David Foster Wallace
Tenho lido alguns textos de Wallace e assistido umas entrevistas para me situar antes de ler Infinite Jest. This is Water, na verdade, foi um discurso dado por ele numa cerimônia de graduação universitária, mas foi tão bom que passou para uma versão escrita. Wallace expressa com muita sinceridade — e sem ser piegas — as maiores frustrações da vida adulta, e não oferece solução (porque não há) mas uma espécie de conselho que é mais para uma sugestão fruto da experiência:
The only thing that's capital-T True is that you get to decide how you're gonna try to see it. This, I submit, is the freedom of a real education, of learning how to be well-adjusted. You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn't. You get to decide what to worship.
Me impactou tanto que foi a inspiração para meu texto The End of Spring.
History, Character and Conscience in Richard III - Richard P. Wheeler
Poucas coisas são tão prazerosas para mim quanto ler sobre a obra de Shakespeare. Estou com saudade de escrever meu TCC (que foi sobre Richard II) e aproveitei a oportunidade para pesquisar um pouco sobre Richard III, e descobri que ambas as peças possuem “problemáticas” teóricas muito semelhantes — tanto que comecei a escrever sobre isso, e espero postar em breve.
Esse artigo fala de um dos pontos mais importantes e interessantes envolvendo as peças históricas de Shakespeare: as visões conflitantes envolvendo o conceito de história “promovido” pela peça. Seria a história cíclica e predeterminada (um dos argumentos por trás do “Tudor Myth”) ou indiferentemente caótica? Essa tensão (tal qual entre medievalismo e modernidade em Richard II) é o que possibilita as interpretações opostas da obra de Shakespeare, e o desafio que alguns teóricos buscam enfrentar é apontar onde o próprio autor se encontra nesse espectro, e assim desvendar o “real” posicionamento da peça. Não acho que haja um único e verdadeiro posicionamento em nenhuma peça de Shakespeare mas, para fins acadêmicos, é necessário tentar apontar algum, a partir das melhores evidências e argumentos disponíveis.
The Symbolism of Poetry - W.B. Yeats (1900)
Quando Pinsky tentou explicar o ritmo poético no livro mencionado acima, eu não entendi totalmente. Mas quando Yeats disse que “the purpose of rhythm… is to prolong the moment of contemplation… by hushing us with an alluring monotony, while it holds us waking by variety, to keep us in that state of perhaps real trance, in which the mind liberated from the pressure of the will is unfolded in symbols”, tudo ficou claro. Talvez eu esteja sendo meio injusta com Pinsky, mas é só para ilustrar que para mim funcionou melhor explicar poesia através da poesia.
Isso porque esse ensaio de Yeats é totalmente poético, e ainda bem que é. O autor faz uma análise introspectiva sobre como os símbolos (cores por exemplo) existem de forma “inerente” e como através da poesia eles se transformam em emoções mais complexas. Tenho que admitir que não entendi tudo que Yeats disse aqui, mas eu entendi o suficiente para saber que tem algum insight brilhante por trás da superfície da linguagem erudita, e por isso eu preciso lê-lo mais vezes até o momento de epifania chegar.
I doubt indeed if the crude circumstance of the world, which seems to create all our emotions, does more than reflect, as in multiplying mirrors, the emotions that have come to solitary men in moments of poetical contemplation; or that love itself would be more than an animal hunger but for the poet and his shadow priest…
A Possible Keats - Fleur Jaeggy
Em junho vou ler parte da obra de Keats em um clube do livro e to bem animada. Como não sabia nada sobre o poeta, fora ter lido alguns de seus poemas mais famosos, resolvi me informar mais sobre ele, e me recomendaram este ensaio de Fleur Jaeggy, no qual ela oferece uma curta biografia que ajuda a contextualizar o trabalho. É triste demais que ele tenha morrido tão cedo, mas aparentemente, os grandes artistas ou morrem cedo ou vivem o suficiente para se tornarem obsoletos. A Possible Keats é bem introdutório e interessante e indico justamente para quem, como eu, não conhece muito sobre o autor.
FILMES & SÉRIES
Challengers - Luca Guadagnino (2024)
Tem filmes que você não apenas assiste (passivamente) mas experiencia, com todos os sentidos. Challengers foi uma experiência brutal, belíssima, intensa!! Não tenho mais o que dizer além de que é um filme perfeito, então fiquem com essa frase de David Foster Wallace, que jogou tênis por muitos anos e quase foi profissional:
Tennis’s beauty’s infinite roots are self-competitive. You compete with your own limits to transcend the self in imagination and execution. Disappear inside the game: break through limits: transcend: improve: win. Which is why tennis is an essentially tragic enterprise… You seek to vanquish and transcend the limited self whose limits make the game possible.
Twin Peaks - David Lynch e Mark Frost (1990)
Atualmente estou na metade da 2ª temporada, mas já sei que Twin Peaks será uma das minhas séries favoritas. Tudo nessa série me encanta: o tom rosado da imagem, o humor e o drama, a loucura inexplicável (the log lady!!), os personagens extremamente reais e cativantes (te amo Agente Cooper) e suas dinâmicas fascinantes e, é claro, o mistério envolvendo Laura Palmer. A graça dessa série (e de tantas outras obras que adoro) está na especulação e alto poder sugestivo — tudo fica mais divertido quando o espectador (ou leitor) é convidado a preencher lacunas intencionais. A série como um todo é fascinante, e pode ser apreciada de formas diferentes graças aos seus subplots interligados que equilibram o peso do mistério de Laura. Absolute TV!
Interview with the Vampire - Rolin Jones (2022 - )
Um fato engraçado sobre mim é que, se uma série for adotada pela curiosa comunidade do Tumblr, eu sei que vou amá-la, e dessa vez não foi diferente. Se faz sucesso no Tumblr, é meu tipo de série (desse nicho as únicas que não assisti ainda foram Hannibal, Good Omens e Dr. Who — mas eu sei que amaria todas). Assim, mais uma vez fui influenciada por esse site (e por minha amiga Gi) e comecei a assistir a nova versão de Interview with the Vampire — audaciosamente explícito, sexy, católico e violento. Acima de tudo, muito bem produzido e escrito, e com atores maravilhosos. Não fazem mais séries como antigamente (Mad Men, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, as 4 primeiras temporadas de Game of Thrones) mas às vezes surgem, timidamente, obras incríveis como essa (que normalmente morrem rápido), ainda mais rara por ser um reboot melhor que o original (desculpa Anne Rice e Brad Pitt).
Interiors - Woody Allen (1978)
Todas as famílias felizes se parecem, cada família infeliz é infeliz à sua maneira - Liev Tolstói
Espremido entre Manhattan e Annie Hall, Interiors é sofisticado e melancólico, e talvez um novo favorito. Esse filme é um ponto fora da curva na obra de Allen, conhecido por suas comédias meio românticas meio sombrias (atualmente horrivelmente previsíveis), pois narra um drama familiar no estilo de Bergman. Muitas vezes Allen tentou ser o Bergman americano (principalmente no início da carreira), e acho que o mais próximo que ele chegou do Sueco foi com Interiors. Gostei muito do ritmo da narrativa não-linear, meio episódica; do roteiro cheio de diálogos inteligente e menos verborrágico do que de costume; da atuação belíssima de Diane Keaton e Geraldine Page; e, daquilo que me atraiu de primeira: o visual. Os interiores! O cenário do filme é extremamente elegante — todo em tons neutros, espaços amplos e, não por acaso, de uma frieza escandinava.
Suddenly Last Summer - Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1959)
Esse filme despertou grandes expectativas que infelizmente não foram cumpridas. Eu meio que já sabia qual era a história (é uma peça de Tennessee Williams) e é impressionante que alguém (será que foi o próprio Mank?) conseguiu falhar categoricamente tendo um texto de Williams junto com Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor e Montgomery Clift como protagonistas. Nessas circunstâncias eu pensaria que o filme se faria sozinho. O final é literalmente um crime de ódio (vejam por si mesmos).
Suddenly Last Summer gira em torno da misteriosa morte de Sebastian, filho de uma dama rica e extremamente controladora (Hepburn), e sua prima (Taylor) que está prestes a ser lobotomizada por ter supostamente enlouquecido depois de tê-lo visto morrer. Sebastian é uma sombra que nunca aparece de fato no filme, apenas descrito como uma espécie de Dorian Gray, tão adorado pela mãe que subtextos incestuosos emergem logo na primeira cena. Cabe a um psiquiatra renomado (Clift) avaliar o estado de loucura da moça e quem sabe realizar a lobotomia, e com isso ele se torna uma espécie de detetive, investigando as memórias dos parentes de Sebastian. O filme não é de todo ruim, mas teve um gigantesco potencial desperdiçado.
MÚSICA & PODCASTS
For the Roses - Joni Mitchell (1972)
No momento, este é meu album favorito de Joni e não vejo muitas pessoas, inclusive as que gostam da música dela, falando sobre. Realemente tem algo de mágico na voz e nas letras que não falha em me emocionar. Minhas favoritas são: Woman of Heart and Mind, For the Roses, You Turn me on I’m a Radio, e Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire.
Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez (1974)
Uma das minhas músicas favoritas e que não consigo parar de ouvir. Acho que uma das minhas missões na terra é falar de Joan Baez até que ela receba o prestígio e reconhecimento que ela merece — sem Diamonds and Rust não teríamos Lana del Rey cantando Living Legend, Brooklyn Baby ou Let the Light In, e sem Lana não teríamos dezenas de artistas mulheres que existem hoje em dia. Reza a lenda que Joan estava gravando o novo álbum quando Bob Dylan ligou, e então Diamonds and Rust nasceu, com um verso de abertura sincero: Well, I'll be damned / Here comes your ghost again. Cantar essa música é, para mim, um grande expurgo (e olhe que nem tenho um passado romântico interessante).
Abstract Mathematology with Eugenia Cheng - Ologies Podcast
Uma matemática abstrata fala sobre os aspectos mais subjetivos da matemática e como ela pode (e deve) ser usada para estimular o pensamento crítico, entre outras coisas, o que é intrigante, já que geralmente associamos essa habilidade às competências linguísticas e à compreensão de leitura. No início eu estava bem cética, porque sou uma daquelas pessoas traumatizadas pela matemática escolar: lembro de como eu ficava frustrada com a matemática porque não conseguia entender como ela acontecia no “mundo real”. No entanto, acho o lado “místico” da matemática (padrões na natureza e seu uso na música, por exemplo) bastante interessante, por isso fiquei curiosa por esse episódio. A professora Eugenia Cheng não me fez gostar de matemática de forma alguma, mas me fez “simpatizar” mais com sua área.
Megan McDowell “The Obscene Bird of Night” by José Donoso - Beyond the Zero Podcast
Estou numa fase literária que nunca estive antes: ficção experimental moderna/pós-moderna (pense em John Barth, Thomas Pynchon etc.). Fiquei um pouco cansada dos vitorianos depois de passar 2023 com cinco romances de George Eliot, e agora quero novidades. Na minha busca, descobri esse episódio do podcast Beyond the Zero (eles são muito bons) sobre um livro que estava no meu radar desde que vi alguns book bloggers falando dele. The Obscene Bird of Night é o romance mais famoso do escritor chileno José Donoso, uma obra de realismo mágico, descrita como uma espécie de história de terror experimental. Megan McDowell é a tradutora e, neste episódio, ela fala sobre seu processo de tradução e sobre o próprio Donoso. Está no topo da minha lista.
Beatlemania
Minha relação com os Beatles é de fases, e agora estou em um daqueles momentos em que redescobri meu amor por eles. Meu favorito atualmente é The White Album e, embora nunca tenha gostado muito de Magical Mystery Tour, estou obcecada por Your Mother Should Know. É uma música tão engrçadinha! Os Beatles são um conforto divertido para mim, eles me fazem feliz — radiante até. Também estendi minha obsessão à obra-prima tolkeinesca de George, All Things Must Pass. Enfim, aproveite esse vídeo adorável (e hilário — John estava se divertindo até demais) do filme Magical Mystery Tour:
Ever Changing Minstrel - Bill Wilson (1973)
Folk Rock dos anos 70 tem sido minha preferência musical nos últimos meses (talvez vocês tenham notado isso na newsletter), e recentemente descobri o único álbum do cantor Bill Wilson que, até onde eu sei, está completamente esquecido hoje em dia. Eu adorei esse álbum — é como a trilha sonora de uma viagem de carro que corta o deserto em direção ao interior.

I don't know if my attempt to slow down life is working or if May was indeed a sluggish month. But I'm not complaining. It's just that I thought and lived so much this month that time dilated. I read good books, started two great series, chatted a lot about literature, visited one of my favourite places, turned 25 and wrote about it. I thought turning 25 would be more nerve-wracking, but I actually feel quite content... curious to see what the late twenties hold in store.
I'm in a rare moment in which I feel more like writing than reading, so I hope to make the most of it and bring you some good stuff in the coming weeks :)

Richard III - William Shakespeare (1592-3)
Shakespeare ends his English Histories with Richard III — a grand finale worthy of a great journey. This is one of the many Shakespearean plays whose main character is so magnificent that he overshadows all the rest, regardless of how good his setting may be. The hunchback of the Tower of London dominates the play’s language (such as Richard II) with monologues that inspire both disgust and sympathy (I do pity him when he says that if he can’t be loved, then he will have power instead — it echoes Milton’s Satan). After reading and studying all eight history plays, I can confidently say that my obsession with them is absolutely justified, as they are one of the most remarkable bodies of work in literature. Trust me and read the English Histories!
The Sounds of Poetry - Robert Pinsky (1998)
I read this for a bookclub and it was nice but somewhat underwhelming. I’m still a newbie in poetry, and this book aims to teach the basics of scansion, meter, rhythm, etc. I confess I did not find it all that useful since Pinsky overexplains many concepts, which ends up complicating the simple.
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek - Annie Dillard (1974)
I picked up this book to read because, lately, I’ve been wistfully thinking about nature since I spend a lot of time cooped up in a flat and an office; it was a way of giving my mind a rest and transporting me — and it worked. Annie's images of the Tinker Creek woods are extremely vivid, immersive, the reader feels the seasons as she describes them (we feel the stillness of winter, the oppressive humidity of summer, the fresh breeze of spring) she is an excellent writer in this respect.
The book takes place over the course of a year, divided into seasons, starting with one winter and ending with the next. The descriptions of the natural metamorphoses of the seasons are the book's strong point, and this is when Dillard gets close to poetry, as she pays deep and meticulous attention to her surroundings at Tinker Creek — a kind of attention we see much more in poetry than in narrative. For the last few months, I've noticed that this attention business has been a constant concern for me; I've been trying to be more observant, because you have to exercise your writing constantly, and not just in the act of writing — if I'm going to write about what I see, I have to be actively seeing it, otherwise I won't have anything to bring to the text. Few writers today are as observant as Annie, and that's the credit I give her. I think I've managed to be more ‘aware’ when moving through the world in my day-to-day life. Annie's book sort of intensified this goal of mine, and I found her very inspiring in that respect.

The Function of Criticism - Helen Vendler

Sadly, Helen Vendler passed away a month ago. She was a great role model for me, I believe for many in the literary community, and she will certainly continue to be so. I decided to bring you an essay in her honour. Here, Vendler makes a kind of defence of literary criticism, bringing several examples from writers who have been the objects of criticism to critics themselves. She explains the metamorphosis of criticism over the years, which traditionally consisted of acquiring knowledge and a ‘secular evangelism’ in disseminating learning. Nowadays, Matthew Arnold's concept of ‘making known the best that has been thought or said’ is obsolete, as it contains ‘elitist’ or ‘dogmatic’ subtexts (still controversial).
We can discover its function through the style of criticism - made up of intention, temperament, motivation, convictions, etc. Therefore, there is no universal function of criticism. Throughout the text, Vendler mentions the criticism of authors such as Barthes, Ashbery and Bloom in order to find points of intersection and difference in this textual practice. It's very interesting, and it certainly made me reflect on my writing process.

History, Character and Conscience in Richard III - Richard P. Wheeler
Few things are as pleasurable for me as reading about Shakespeare's work. I miss writing my dissertation (which was on Richard II) and I took the opportunity to do some research on Richard III. I discovered that both plays have very similar theory ‘problems’ - so much so that I've started writing about it, and I hope to post it soon.
This article deals with one of the most important and interesting points involving Shakespeare's history plays: the conflicting views surrounding the concept of history ‘promoted’ by the play. Is history cyclical and predetermined (one of the arguments behind the ‘Tudor Myth’) or indifferently chaotic? This tension (like the one between medievalism and modernity in Richard II) is what makes the opposing interpretations of Shakespeare's work possible, and the challenge that some scholars seek to address is to pinpoint where the author himself lies on this spectrum, and thus uncover the ‘real’ stance of the play. I don't think there is a single true stance in any of Shakespeare's plays, but for academic purposes, it is required to try to pinpoint one, based on the best available evidence and arguments.
The Symbolism of Poetry - W.B. Yeats (1900)
When Pinsky tried to explain poetic rhythm in the book mentioned above, I didn't fully understand it. But when Yeats said that ‘the purpose of rhythm... is to prolong the moment of contemplation... by hushing us with an alluring monotony, while it holds us waking by variety, to keep us in that state of perhaps real trance, in which the mind liberated from the pressure of the will is unfolded in symbols’, everything became clear. Perhaps I'm being a little unfair to Pinsky, but it's just to illustrate that it worked better for me to explain poetry through poetry.
That's because this essay by Yeats is utterly poetic, and I'm glad it is. The author makes an introspective analysis of how symbols (colours, for example) exist "inherently" and how through poetry they are transformed into more complex emotions. I must admit that I didn't understand everything Yeats said here, but I understood enough to know that there is some brilliant insight behind the surface of erudite language, which is why I need to reread it again and again until the moment of epiphany arrives.
I doubt indeed if the crude circumstance of the world, which seems to create all our emotions, does more than reflect, as in multiplying mirrors, the emotions that have come to solitary men in moments of poetical contemplation; or that love itself would be more than an animal hunger but for the poet and his shadow priest…
A Possible Keats - Fleur Jaeggy
In June I'm going to read some of Keats' work for a bookclub and I'm really excited about it. As I didn't know anything about the poet, apart from having read some of his most famous poems, I decided to learn more about him, and was recommended this essay by Fleur Jaeggy, in which she offers a short biography that helps to contextualise his work. It is sad that he died so early, but apparently great artists either die early or live long enough to become obsolete. A Possible Keats is very introductory and interesting and I recommend it particularly for those who, like me, don't know much about Keats.
FILMS & SERIES
Challengers - Luca Guadagnino (2024)
There are films that you don't just watch (passively) but experience, with all your senses. Challengers was a brutal, beautiful, intense experience!! I don't have much more to say than that it's a perfect film, so I'll leave you with this quote from David Foster Wallace, who played tennis for many years and was almost a professional:
Tennis’s beauty’s infinite roots are self-competitive. You compete with your own limits to transcend the self in imagination and execution. Disappear inside the game: break through limits: transcend: improve: win. Which is why tennis is an essentially tragic enterprise… You seek to vanquish and transcend the limited self whose limits make the game possible.
Twin Peaks - David Lynch and Mark Frost (1990)
I'm currently halfway through Season 2, but I already can tell that Twin Peaks will be one of my favourite series. Everything about this series enchants me: the pinkish tone of the images, the humour and drama, the inexplicable lunacy (the log lady!!), the extremely real and captivating characters (I love you Agent Cooper) and their fascinating dynamics and, of course, the mystery surrounding Laura Palmer. The fun of this series (and so many other works I love) is in the speculation and high suggestive power - everything is more fun when the viewer (or reader) is invited to fill in intentional gaps. The series as a whole is fascinating, and can be enjoyed in different ways thanks to its interconnected subplots that balance the weight of Laura's mystery. Absolute TV!
Interview with the Vampire - Rolin Jones (2022 - )
A funny thing about me is that if a series is adopted by the ever-curious Tumblr community, I know I'm going to love it, and this time was no different. Basically, if it's successful on Tumblr, it's my kind of series (of this niche, the only ones I haven't watched yet are Hannibal, Good Omens and Dr Who - but I know I'd love them all). So once again I was influenced by this site (and my friend Gi) and started watching the new version of Interview with the Vampire — audaciously explicit, sexy, catholic and violent. Above all, really well produced and written, with marvellous actors. They don't make TV shows like they used to (Mad Men, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones), but sometimes incredible pieces like this (which usually die a quick death) appear, all the more rare for being better than the original (sorry Anne Rice and Brad Pitt).
Interiors - Woody Allen (1978)
All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. - Leo Tolstoy
Squeezed between Manhattan and Annie Hall, Interiors is sophisticated and melancholic, and perhaps a new favourite. This film is a departure from Allen's usual work, known for his half-romantic, half-dark comedies (which are now horribly predictable), as it portrays a family drama in the style of Bergman. Allen often tried to be the American Bergman (especially at the start of his career), and I think the closest he came to the Swede was with Interiors. I really enjoyed the rhythm of the non-linear, somewhat episodic narrative; the script full of intelligent dialogue and less verbose than usual; the beautiful performances by Diane Keaton and Geraldine Page; and, what first attracted me: the visuals. The interiors! The film's setting is extremely elegant — all neutral tones, large spaces and, not incidentally, Scandinavian coolness.
Suddenly Last Summer - Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1959)
This film aroused great expectations that were unfortunately not fulfilled. I sort of knew what the story was (it's a play by Tennessee Williams) and it's astonishing that someone (was it Mank himself?) managed to fail categorically with a screenplay by Williams starring Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. Under those circumstances, I would think that the film would have made itself. The ending is literally a hate crime (see for yourselves).
Suddenly Last Summer revolves around the mysterious death of Sebastian, the son of a wealthy and extremely controlling lady (Hepburn), and his cousin (Taylor) who is about to be lobotomised for allegedly going mad after seeing him die. Sebastian is a shadow who never really appears in the film, only described as a kind of Dorian Gray, so adored by his mother that incestuous subtexts emerge from the very first scene. It's up to a renowned psychiatrist (Clift) to assess the girl's state of madness and perhaps perform a lobotomy, so he becomes a kind of detective, investigating the memories of Sebastian's relatives. The film isn't all bad, but it had a lot of wasted potential.
MUSIC & PODCASTS
For the Roses - Joni Mitchell (1972)
Currently, this is my favourite Joni album and I don't see many people, including those who like her music, talking about it. There really is something magical about her voice and lyrics that never fails to move me. My favourites are: Woman of Heart and Mind, For the Roses, You Turn Me on I’m a Radio, e Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire.
Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez (1974)
One of my favourite songs that I can't stop listening to. I think one of my missions on earth is to talk about Joan Baez until she receives the prestige and recognition she deserves - without Diamonds and Rust we wouldn't have Lana del Rey singing Living Legend, Brooklyn Baby or Let the Light In, and without Lana we wouldn't have dozens of female artists around today. Legend has it that Joan was recording her new album when Bob Dylan called, and Diamonds and Rust was born, with a blunt opening verse: Well, I'll be damned / Here comes your ghost again. Singing this song is like a great purge for me (and I don't even have an interesting romantic past).
Abstract Mathematology with Eugenia Cheng - Ologies Podcast
An abstract mathematician talks about the more subjective aspects of math, and how it can (and should) be used to stimulate critical thinking, among other things, which is intriguing since we often associate this ability with language skills and reading comprehension. I was sceptical at first, because I’m one of those people who are traumatized by school maths: I remember how frustrated I was with math because I couldn’t understand how it happened in the ‘real world’. However, I find the ‘mystical’ side of math (patterns in nature and its use in music, for example) quite interesting so I was curious about this episode. Professor Eugenia Cheng did not make me like math by any means, but it made me ‘sympathize’ with her field more.
Megan McDowell “The Obscene Bird of Night” by José Donoso - Beyond the Zero Podcast
I’m in a literary mood I’ve never been in before: modern/post-modern experimental literary fiction (think of John Barth, Thomas Pynchon etc.). I got a little tired of the Victorians after spending 2023 with five novels by George Eliot, and now I want novelty. In my search for it, I discovered this episode by Beyond the Zero Podcast (they’re very cool) about a book that has been on my radar ever since I saw a few fellow book bloggers posting it. The Obscene Bird of Night is the most famous novel by the Chilean writer José Donoso, a work of magical realism, described as a kind of experimental horror story. Megan McDowell is the translator, and in this episode, she talks about her translating process and about Donoso himself. It’s high on my TBR now.
Beatlemania
I keep falling in and out of love with The Beatles, and now I’m in one of those moods in which I rediscovered my love for them. My current favourite is The White Album, and although I never really liked Magical Mystery Tour, I’m obsessed with Your Mother Should Know. It’s such a fun song! The Beatles are comforting and amusing to me, they make me happy — jolly even. Also, I extended my obsession to George’s tolkeinesque masterpiece All Things Must Pass. Ever Changing Minstrel - Bill Wilson
Folk rock from the 70s has been my musical preference in recent months (you may have noticed this in the newsletter), and I recently discovered the sole album by singer Bill Wilson which, as far as I know, is utterly forgotten these days. I loved this album - it's like the soundtrack to a road trip that cuts through the desert and into the countryside.

And what a great connection between Challengers and the DFW quote. I once went to a reading at UC-San Diego by the poet Sharon Olds, expecting a small group of poetry fans, and was shocked to find that the auditorium was packed. Then this young guy wearing a bandana got up to read from his essay "A supposedly fun thing I'll never do again" - he was unassuming, sardonic, and brilliant, and of course it was David Foster Wallace. I'm grateful that I managed to accidentally find myself in a (very large) room with him and his stories.
