Caros leitores,
Primeiramente, perdão pelo atraso do post, fui impedida por um deadline importante que atrasou minhas atividades normais seguido de uma gripe.
Fora isso, junho foi um ótimo mês no quesito livros e filmes. Li A Midsummer Night’s Dream pela primeira vez e gostei mais do que esperava, reli A Sociedade do Anel e fiquei ainda mais obcecada pela saga de Tolkien, e assisti os dois maiores filmes de Fellini pela primeira vez, na tela do cinema (privilégio), e agora estou completamente obcecada por Anouk Aimee. Passei muito tempo escrevendo também (a ponto de enlouquecer), e atingi mil inscritos no substack! Obrigada, queridos, por me acompanharem aqui <3
Planejo algumas novidades para o segundo semestre e é algo que me deixa meio nervosa. Mas vamos falar disso depois.
Em julho vou começar um curso sobre Yeats, um dos meus poetas favoritos, então quis colocar um poema dele esse mês:

The Writing Life - Annie Dillard (1989)
Li esse livro tentando sair de um “writing slump” e funcionou mas não da maneira que eu esperava. The Writing Life não é exatamente um manual de escrita (não que eu ache que exista tal coisa), nem é um guia, nem mesmo uma coletânea de conselhos. Aqui na verdade temos Dillard compartilhando seu processo de escrita de outros livros e seus consequentes aprendizados; serviu para tornar o bloqueio criativo menos solitário pois muito do que ela relata eu me identifiquei. Em dado momento, ela fornece algumas “máximas” sobre escrita a partir de sua trajetória de tentativa e erro, e eu achei isso bem útil. Gostei mas acho que não seria tão interessante para pessoas que não escrevem ou não se interessam por esse processo.
A Sociedade do Anel - J.R.R. Tolkien (1954)
Uma releitura maravilhosa e que me fez criar um novo apreço por Tolkien, até porque eu li esse livro pela primeira vez há seis anos atrás. Tendo um pouco mais de repertório, foi interessante notar as influências da literatura mitológica, medieval e bíblica na obra. Por exemplo, estando familiarizada com o trabalho de Joseph Campbell, esse livro ganha novas dimensões: arquétipos heróicos, noções de predestinação e cosmologia medieval são alguns elementos presentes que antes eu não teria identificado.
Reli junto com algumas pessoas, e debatemos muito sobre a natureza do Um Anel. Tolkien parece criticar a ideia de que alguém poderia usar o poder do Anel para o bem, não importa quão boas sejam as intenções, pois o tipo de poder em si, bem como sua criação, possui uma maldade inata. Uma pessoa sábia saberia disso e estaria ciente de sua suscetibilidade à ser corrompido — isso explicaria a recusa de Gandalf e a restrição de Aragorn em relação ao Anel; a tentação é grande demais e, mais cedo ou mais tarde, o Anel tomaria conta do portador.
Exile and the Kingdom - Albert Camus (1957)
Exile and the Kingdom é a primeira coletânea de contos que leio do autor. Até então eu só havia lido O Mito de Sísifo (que gosto muito). É um livro extremamente perturbador pois todas as histórias possuem um aspecto de horror, aflição e desolação, variando apenas na intensidade desses sentimentos. O conto que mais ficou na minha cabeça foi “The Renegade”, que me causou uma sensação de agonia semelhante a “O Poço e o Pêndulo” de Edgar Allan Poe.
Ao terminar a leitura, percebi que todos os contos possuem uma sensação claustrofóbica, transmitida através da perspectiva de personagens em situações de isolamento ou estranhamento — no sentido freudiano do uncanny. Não é, portanto, uma leitura muito agradável, e imagino que não vá ser do gosto de todos. Para mim, o prazer da leitura consistiu em admirar a maestria técnica do autor: é impressionante como ele consegue provocar tamanha repulsa e intensidade emocional com uma escrita tão econômica e elegante — é quase uma antítese. Meu conto favorito (e talvez o mais acessível da coletânea) é “Jonas, or the Artist at Work” — se for ler algum conto de Camus, leia esse.
The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy (1886)
Fiquei bem decepcionada com o romance, especialmente porque já tinha lido Hardy antes e adorado — The Return of the Native está entre os melhores livros que já li. Por isso, fui com grandes expectativas para esse aqui. No fim das contas, achei uma mistura estranha de tédio e absurdo: não consegui me importar com a história nem com os personagens, e, embora o enredo seja tão insano que deveria ser interessante, simplesmente não funcionou pra mim.
Michael Henchard, o prefeito, começa a história como um jovem pobre e desesperado, que num momento de embriaguez vende a esposa e a filha bebê a um marinheiro em uma feira. A mulher, também cansada dos maus-tratos e sem instrução, acredita que a venda é legítima e aceita “tentar a sorte em outro lugar”. Quando Henchard recobra a sobriedade, percebe o que fez e tenta reencontrá-las. Devo dizer que esse homem é um dos personagens mais insuportáveis que já vi. Ele é horrível em muitos sentidos, mas também é o único com uma personalidade real; é histriônico e dramático, mas real. Michael é intenso, obsessivo, ciumento, inseguro e completamente impulsivo. Já os outros personagens parecem existir apenas para reagir aos seus erros e explosões, sem vida própria.
Assim, acompanhamos, por alguns anos, a vida dele e dos que orbitam a seu redor. No clássico estilo Vitoriano, é uma história de sucessão e queda, segredos e revelações sensacionalistas, e atitudes drásticas sendo tomadas em nome da reputação. Infelizmente não recomendo esse livro nem um pouco, mas sorte a nossa que Hardy tem vários outros livros que parecem ser bem melhores.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream - William Shakespeare (c. 1595)
Metamorfose, imaginação, e o conflito entre razão e paixão são os temas principais desta comédia maravilhosa. O “sonho” no título fornece a chave para entendermos essa peça que mexe tanto com a percepção dos personagens. O motif de olhos/visão é recorrente, e o tempo todo os personagens contrapõem realidade e imaginação através de paralelos entre “ver com os olhos” e “ver com a mente”. A confusão principal começa justamente com uma poção mágica derramada nos olhos de Titania e Lysander enquanto dormem, cujo objetivo é fazer com que eles se apaixonem pela primeira pessoa que avistarem. Assim, ao despertarem com a percepção transfigurada, pode-se dizer que eles acordaram em uma nova realidade (um sonho) no qual os precedentes estabelecidos no mundo real – isto é, fora dessa floresta encantada – não valem mais.
A dissonância causada pela magia entre o que é dito como fato e o que é realmente fato cria a comédia na peça: várias trocas de casais acontecem, bem como a clássica “peça dentro da peça” (a melhor cena, na minha opinião). Recomendo ler se estivar precisando de algo que melhore seu humor.
ARTIGOS, ENSAIOS, PALESTRAS
The Bible and Poetry - Michael Edwards for the Paris Review (2023)
Certain scholars of the Bible have long known that the poetry is not there simply to add a dash of nobility, or sublimity, or emotive force to what the author could have said in prose. They learned from literary critics what the critics had learned from poets: poetry is in itself a way of thinking and of imagining the world; it discovers with precision what it had to say only by saying it; the meaning of a poem awaits us in its manner of being, and meaning in the customary sense of the word is not what is most important about it.
Edwards argumenta que a poesia não é apenas decorativa na Bíblia — ela é a forma essencial da Bíblia: “Se a linguagem antes da Queda era poética, ou produzia poemas em momentos carregados de significado, a poesia representa para nós o apogeu de nossa fala caída — seu início e seu fim, sua nostalgia e sua esperança?”. Sempre fui fascinada pela Bíblia como obra literária (tenho o livro The Great Code, de Northrop Frye, esperando por mim na minha estante), e a ideia do que consiste em linguagem caída e não caída é profundamente interessante, especialmente se isso significa imaginar a poesia como o que resta do Éden (se tal lugar existisse).
O autor enfatiza que a poesia bíblica hebraica e grega depende de jogos de palavras, ritmo e nuances. Essa linguagem lúdica e complexa revela uma teologia que é mais do que apenas leis ou doutrinas, e deve ser lida com mais subjetividade. Ele também nos lembra da dificuldade da tradução, já que o significado muda de acordo com as palavras, particularmente na poesia, pois as palavras em um verso têm significados em si mesmas; não se pode simplesmente parafrasear ou traduzir um poema sem perder algo crucial.
The Artist - Robert Walser
Always he found talent to be intimately linked to joie de vivre, ability to gaiety, and craftsmanship to human flourishing, and he proceeded accordingly, with sometimes greater, sometimes lesser success and skill. If he failed at something, he did not cast it aside, but instead let it sit for a day, then examined it again, and since he returned to it, deeming it worthy of renewed attention, it proved to be serviceable.
Neste ensaio curto e bonito, Walser descreve a personalidade de um artista “ideal”. Sempre trabalhando, sempre acreditando no trabalho, atento à vida e capaz de extrair grandeza dela, sem se preocupar muito. É uma perspectiva “nova” em relação ao sofrimento habitual do “artista da fome” e, embora pareça ingênua ou melosa, a prosa de Walser consegue permanecer dentro dos limites da esperança — é um retrato da esperança. Ele conclui seu ensaio com uma frase simples, mas que carrega densas camadas de história literária e filosófica, de Juliana de Norwich a Shakespeare e T.S. Eliot: “all is well”.
Reflections on Writing - Henry Miller (1941)
Art is only a means to life, to the life more abundant. It is not in itself the life more abundant. It merely points the way, something which is overlooked not only by the public, but very often by the artist himself. In becoming an end it defeats itself.
Uma das minhas coisas favoritas de ler é o funcionamento da mente de uma pessoa interessante. Adoro descobrir perspectivas únicas (especialmente porque sou teimosa e isso pode levar à inflexibilidade) e Henry Miller tem uma mente fascinante. Sempre se pode aprender muito com artistas como ele. Neste ensaio, ele explica como começou a escrever “imitando os grandes” (o que parece ser como muitos grandes escritores começam — bom saber, já que faço o mesmo) até que finalmente encontrou sua própria voz. Ele fala sobre descobrir que escrever ficção não é para ele e sobre o significado e a lógica da escrita.
FILMES & SÉRIES
The Phoenician Scheme - Wes Anderson (2025)
A primeira coisa que se fala dos filmes de Wes Anderson é sobre o visual. Nunca me canso de ver a construção de imagens coloridas que ele cria, e fazia muito tempo que eu não assistia um filme dele no cinema. Acho que, fora Grande Hotel Budapeste, esse é o filme mais bonito que Anderson já fez. Adorei que a história explora o relacionamento entre pai e filha de uma forma dramática mas não trágica. E a atuação de Michael Cera foi a minha favorita, ele é o esquisito perfeito.
Saneamento Básico - Jorge Furtado (2007)
O filme mais engraçado que vi nos últimos tempos (teve alguns momentos que achei que eu e meu namorado seríamos expulsos do cinema rindo tão alto — eu sou péssima nesse sentido, me expresso muito no cinema me perdoem). Primeiro que eu amo filmes sobre fazer filmes, melhor ainda se for um filme amador fruto de uma maracutaia governamental para resolver o saneamento da cidade; segundo que amo os atores envolvidos, e nunca mais esquecerei de Camila Pitanga como Silene Seagal, indo para sua festa de formatura e depois sendo atacada por Wagner Moura vestido de monstro do pântano.
Parthenope - Paolo Sorrentino (2024)
Eu tinha alguma esperança de gostar desse filme, mas me decepcionei completamente. Até gostei de A Grande Beleza, apesar de ser meio artifical demais, mas Parthenope repete a mensagem típica de Sorrentino sobre beleza, juventude e decadência só que de forma muito mais vazia. Senti que o filme andou em círculos sobre esses temas sem nunca dizer nada substancial ou minimamente interessante. Pior do que uma história causar reações negativas é não causar reação nenhuma. Parthenope, a mulher e o filme, é terrivelmente entediante; o olhar voyeuristico da câmera comete o clássico crime artístico: se tornar aquilo que tenta (será que tenta?) criticar.
The Death of Stalin - Armando Iannucci (2017)
Através de uma sucessão de equívocos, um momento de extrema tensão política se transforma em uma grande comédia de erros, o meu tipo favorito de comédia. A premissa é simples e promete o caos: Stalin morre de forma brusca e inesperada, e agora o alto escalão soviético precisa escolher um sucessor, transicionar o governo da forma mais tranquila possível, e esconder da população a morte do líder enquanto for possível. Gostei muito da cena inicial do filme, meio episódica, que atua como um prelúdio, na qual uma orquestra de rádio tem que repetir a apresentação de uma sinfonia pois Stalin liga, pessoalmente, para a estação pedindo um disco com a gravação da performance — que obviamente não tinha sido gravada antes. Se você gosta desse filme ou gostou de como eu o descrevi, recomendo ler O Mestre e Margarida de Bulgakov.
Letter from an Unknwon Woman - Max Ophüls (1948)
Se eu tivesse visto esse filme na adolescência eu tenhpo certeza que teria se tornado um favorito. Às vezes, assistir filmes ou ler livros demais te torna menos suceptível a se impressionar com as coisas, e hoje é muito difícil encontrar um novo favorito, mesmo quando há potencial. Letter from an Unknwon Woman chegou bem perto, e gostaria de revê-lo muitas vezes ainda. Baseado numa história de Stefan Zweig (ponto positivo), o filme é narrado através de uma carta que Lisa escreve para o pianista Stefan Brand, por quem ela é apaixonada desde que ela era uma menina e ele seu vizinho mulherengo. Lisa conta para ele a história de sua vida, até o momento que seus destinos se cruzam e se separam novamente. É um filme lindo mas muito triste, preparem os lencinhos.
La Dolce Vita - Federico Fellini (1960)
Primeiro filme que vi de Fellini, e confesso que foi um pouco demais para mim. Deu pra perceber que ele é bastante maximalista, e as três horas desse filme terminaram me cansando. Eu poderia comparar La Dolce Vita com um livro como Guerra e Paz, com relação a quantidade de personagens, subplots, e, claro, o tamanho. O filme é meio episódico, isto é, acompanhamos o jornalista Marcello em diversas situações um tanto desconexas (difícil acompanhar a passagem do tempo, por exemplo), mas seguindo uma trajetória de linear de decadência e pessimismo. Algumas cenas ficaram na minha cabeça, mas sinto que preciso rever esse filme para de fato ter uma opinião sobre ele.
8½ - Federico Fellini (1963)
Apesar de possuir o mesmo maximalismo de La Dolce Vita, achei este filme mais sofisticado que o outro. Num geral ele é mais polido, mesmo que conserve o drama e o exagero de Fellini. Gostei muitíssimo de 8½, principalmente das sequências de sonhno — a cena de abertura com Marcello Mastroianni preso dentro do carro é uma das melhores coisas que já vi no cinema; fiquei completamente hipnotizada. Mas para mim, o destaque da atuação vai para Anouk Aimee, interpretando a esposa de Mastroianni (um diretor de cinema alter-ego do próprio Fellini). Como disse anteriormente, amo filmes sobre fazer filmes, e esse vai um pouco além: ele é sobre a dificuldade ou impossibilidade de fazer o filme que se deseja. E isso vale para outros meios artísticos. Tive um professor de escrita que disse que, quando não estiver conseguindo escrever então escreva sobre não conseguir escrever, e aparentemente foi o que Fellini fez.
Só duas coisas me incomodaram: é um filme extremamente caótico às vezes, muito barulhento, e acho que Fellini exagerou um pouco nesse método para ilustrar a falta de paz do diretor; mas isso é mais uma questão de gosto. A outra questão foi o final: eu teria terminado o filme antes, numa certa conversa numa rua deserta, e não com aquela circo de atores. Entendo o porquê dessa escolha e, novamente, acho que é apenas uma discordância de estilo.
Memories of Murder - Bong Joon Ho (2003)
Poucas vezes um filme me deixou tão frustrada. Como pode tantos erros serem cometidos em uma investigação de assassinato? Digo isso porque é baseado num caso real de assassinatos em série que aconteceu na Coréia do Sul, e que na época que o filme foi lançado permanecia sem solução (hoje o assassino já está preso, mas porque ele se entregou). É um suspense incrível e cheio de reviravoltas, muitos momentos de comportamentos humanos asquerosos, e grandes atuações. Mas saiba que você vai terminar o filme com raiva.

The Medici Family and Savonarola: a series - The Rest is History Podcast
Isso mesmo, mais uma série de podcast do The Rest is History. Eles são os maiorais, fazer o que. Como a Renascença é meu período histórico favorito, eu não podia deixar essa série de lado. Aviso logo que é muita informação (e eu já esqueci metade dos detalhes), porém é interessantíssimo e Savonarola é o pior tipo de religioso que existe (vale explicar que eu odeio Martinho Lutero, e Savonarola foi uma espécie de Lutero católico). Isso me lembra que tem um romance de George Eliot chamado Romola que se passa nessa época e Savonarola é um personagem… conhecendo Eliot, ou vai ser um tédio ou muito interessante, sem meio termo.

Se você me acompanha há um tempo, talvez saiba que Frank O’Hara é um dos meus poetas favoritos. Ele tem um álbum lendo alguns de seus poemas disponível no spotify, e resolvi fazer uma playlist inspirada nos poemas e como acompanhamento deles também. Flaming Pie (Archive Collection) - Paul McCartney (1997/2020)
Paul é meu Beatle favorito e de vez em quando eu fico obcecada por ele de novo. Escutei vários álbuns seus em Junho, mas o principal foi o Flaming Pie. Esse álbum realmente me fez feliz durante momentos de melancolia, e esse relançamento com gravações alternativas merece muito ser explorado. First of all, sorry for the delay in posting, I was held up by an important deadline that hindered my normal activities, followed by an awful case of the flu.
Other than that, June was a great month in terms of books and movies. I read A Midsummer Night's Dream for the first time and liked it more than I expected, reread The Fellowship of the Ring and became even more obsessed with Tolkien's saga, and watched Fellini's two greatest films for the first time on the big screen (what a privilege), and now I'm completely obsessed with Anouk Aimee. I also spent a lot of time writing (to the point of going crazy), and reached 1,000 subscribers on Substack! Thank you, dear ones, for following me here <3
I'm planning some new things for the second half of the year, and it's something that makes me a little nervous. But we'll talk about that later.
In July, I will begin a course on Yeats, one of my favourite poets, so I wanted to share one of his poems this month:

The Writing Life - Annie Dillard (1989)
I read this book trying to get out of a writing slump, and it worked, but not in the way I expected. The Writing Life is not exactly a writing manual (not that I think such a thing exists), nor is it a guide, or even a collection of advice. Here, we actually have Dillard sharing her process of writing other books and her resulting learnings; it served to make creative block less lonely because I identified with much of what she reports. At one point, she provides some “maxims” about writing based on her trial-and-error journey, and I found that very useful. I liked it, but I don't think it would be as interesting for people who don't write or aren't interested in the process.
The Fellowship of the Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien (1954)
A wonderful re-reading that made me appreciate Tolkien in a new light, especially since I first read this book six years ago. With a little more background knowledge, it was interesting to note the influences of mythological, medieval, and biblical literature in the work. For example, being familiar with the work of Joseph Campbell, this book takes on new dimensions: heroic archetypes, notions of predestination, and medieval cosmology are some elements present that I would not have identified before.
I reread it with some people, and we debated a lot about the nature of the One Ring. Tolkien seems to criticise the idea that someone could use the power of the Ring for good, no matter how good their intentions, because the type of power itself, as well as its creation, has an innate evil. A wise person would know this and be aware of its susceptibility to corruption—this would explain Gandalf's refusal and Aragorn's restraint regarding the Ring; the temptation is too great, and sooner or later, the Ring would take over the bearer.
Exile and the Kingdom - Albert Camus (1957)
Exile and the Kingdom is the first collection of short stories I have read by this author. Until then, I had only read The Myth of Sisyphus (which I adore). It is an extremely disturbing book because all the stories have an aspect of horror, distress and desolation, varying only in the intensity of these feelings. The story that stuck with me the most was ‘The Renegade,’ which caused me a feeling of agony similar to Edgar Allan Poe's ‘The Pit and the Pendulum.’
When I finished reading, I realised that all the stories have a claustrophobic feel, conveyed through the perspective of characters in situations of isolation or strangeness — in the Freudian sense of the uncanny. It is not, therefore, a very pleasant read, and I imagine it will not be to everyone's taste. For me, the pleasure of reading consisted in admiring the author's technical mastery: it is impressive how he manages to provoke such revulsion and emotional intensity with such economical and elegant writing — it is almost an antithesis. My favourite story (and perhaps the most accessible in the collection) is ‘Jonas, or the Artist at Work’ — if you are going to read any of Camus' stories, read this one.

I was very disappointed with the novel, especially because I had read Hardy before and loved it — The Return of the Native is among the best books I’ve ever read. So I went into this one with high expectations. In the end, I found it to be a strange mixture of boredom and absurdity: I couldn't care about the story or the characters, and although the plot is so insane that it should be interesting, it just didn't work for me.
Michael Henchard, the mayor, begins the story as a poor and desperate young man who, in a fit of drunkenness, sells his wife and baby daughter to a sailor at a fair. The woman, also tired of abuse and uneducated, believes the sale is legitimate and agrees to ‘try her luck elsewhere.’ When Henchard regains his sobriety, he realises what he has done and tries to find them again. I must say that this man is one of the most unbearable characters I have ever seen. He is horrible in many ways, but he is also the only one with a real personality; he is histrionic and dramatic, but real. Michael is intense, obsessive, jealous, insecure, and completely impulsive. The other characters, on the other hand, seem to exist only to react to his mistakes and outbursts, without a life of their own.
Thus, we follow his life and those around him for a few years. In classic Victorian style, it is a story of succession and downfall, sensational secrets and revelations, and drastic measures being taken in the name of reputation. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this book at all, but luckily for us, Hardy has several other books that seem to be much better.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream - William Shakespeare (c. 1595)

The ‘dream’ in the title provides the key to understanding a play that deals greatly with the characters' perceptions. The motif of eyes/vision is recurrent, and throughout the play, the characters contrast reality and imagination through parallels between ‘seeing with the eyes’ and ‘seeing with the mind.’ The main confusion begins precisely with a magic potion poured into the eyes of Titania and Lysander while they sleep, whose purpose is to make them fall in love with the first person they see. Thus, when they awaken with their perception transfigured, one could say that they have awakened to a new reality (a dream) in which the precedents established in the real world – that is, outside this enchanted forest – no longer apply.
The dissonance caused by magic between what is said to be fact and what is actually fact creates the comedy in the play: several exchanges of couples take place, as well as the classic “play within a play” (the best scene, in my opinion). I recommend reading it if you need something to improve your mood.

The Bible and Poetry - Michael Edwards for the Paris Review (2023)
Certain scholars of the Bible have long known that the poetry is not there simply to add a dash of nobility, or sublimity, or emotive force to what the author could have said in prose. They learned from literary critics what the critics had learned from poets: poetry is in itself a way of thinking and of imagining the world; it discovers with precision what it had to say only by saying it; the meaning of a poem awaits us in its manner of being, and meaning in the customary sense of the word is not what is most important about it.
Edwards argues that poetry isn’t just decorative in the Bible—it is the Bible’s essential form: “If language before the Fall was poetic, or produced poems at moments charged with meaning, does poetry represent for us the apogee of our fallen speaking—its beginning and its end, its nostalgia and its hope?”. I’ve always been fascinated by the Bible as a literary work (I have Northrop Frye’s The Great Code waiting for me on my shelf), and the idea of what consists of fallen and unfallen language is deeply interesting, especially if it means imagining poetry as what remains of Eden (if such a place existed).
The author emphasises that Hebrew and Greek biblical poetry depend on wordplay, rhythm, and nuance. This playful, layered language reveals a theology that is more than just laws or doctrines, and it should be read with more subjectivity. He reminds us also of the difficulty of translation, since meaning changes according to words, particularly in poetry, as words in a verse have meanings in themselves; you can’t simply paraphrase or translate a poem without losing something crucial.
The Artist - Robert Walser
Always he found talent to be intimately linked to joie de vivre, ability to gaiety, and craftsmanship to human flourishing, and he proceeded accordingly, with sometimes greater, sometimes lesser success and skill. If he failed at something, he did not cast it aside, but instead let it sit for a day, then examined it again, and since he returned to it, deeming it worthy of renewed attention, it proved to be serviceable.
In this short and beautiful essay, Walser describes the character of an “ideal” artist. Always working, always believing in the work, attentive to life and able to extract greatness from it, without worrying too much. It’s a fresh perspective from the usual sufferer, the “starving artist”, and although it seems naive or saccharine, Walser’s prose manages to stay within the limits of hope — it’s a portrait of hope. He concludes his essay with a simple sentence, but one which carries heavy layers of literary and philosophical history, from Julian of Norwich to Shakespeare and T.S. Eliot: “all is well”.
Reflections on Writing - Henry Miller (1941)
Art is only a means to life, to the life more abundant. It is not in itself the life more abundant. It merely points the way, something which is overlooked not only by the public, but very often by the artist himself. In becoming an end it defeats itself.
One of my favourite things to read is the workings of an interesting person’s mind. I love discovering unique perspectives (especially because I’m stubborn and this can lead to single-mindedness), and Henry Miller has a fascinating mind. You can always learn a lot from artists like him. In this essay, he explains how he started writing by “Imitating the greats” (which seems to be how many great writers begin — good to know since I do the same) until he eventually found his own voice. He talks about discovering that writing fiction is not for him, and the meaning, the logic of writing.
FILMS & SERIES
The Phoenician Scheme - Wes Anderson (2025)
The first thing people talk about when it comes to Wes Anderson's films is their visual style. I never tire of seeing the colourful images he creates, and it had been a long time since I had seen one of his films at the cinema. I think that, apart from The Grand Budapest Hotel, this is the most beautiful film Anderson has ever made. I loved how the story explores the relationship between father and daughter in a dramatic but not tragic way. And Michael Cera's performance was my favourite; he's the perfect weirdo.
Saneamento Básico (Basic Sanitation) - Jorge Furtado (2007)
The funniest film I've seen in recent times (there were a few moments when I thought my boyfriend and I would be kicked out of the cinema for laughing so loudly — I'm terrible in that sense, I express myself a lot at the cinema, sorry about that). I don’t know if it’s due to the jokes being in my language, but there’s something about Brazilian comedy that makes it funnier than any other country. I love films about making films, even better if it's an amateur film resulting from a government scheme to solve the city's sanitation problems; secondly, I love the actors involved, and I'll never forget Camila Pitanga as Silene Seagal, going to her graduation party and then being attacked by Wagner Moura dressed as a swamp monster.
Parthenope - Paolo Sorrentino (2024)
I had some hope that I would like this film, but I was completely disappointed. I kind of liked The Great Beauty, even though it was a bit too contrived, but Parthenope repeats Sorrentino's typical message about beauty, youth and decadence, only in a much emptier way. I felt that the film went round in circles on these themes without ever saying anything substantial or even remotely interesting. Worse than a story causing negative reactions is causing no reaction at all. Parthenope, the woman and the film, is terribly boring; the voyeuristic gaze of the camera commits the classic artistic crime: becoming what it tries (does it try though?) to criticise.
The Death of Stalin - Armando Iannucci (2017)
Through a series of mix-ups, a moment of extreme political tension turns into a great comedy of errors, my favourite kind of comedy. The premise is simple and promises chaos: Stalin dies suddenly and unexpectedly, and now the Soviet upper echelons must choose a successor, transition the government as smoothly as possible, and hide the leader's death from the population for as long as possible. I really liked the film's opening scene, which is somewhat episodic and acts as a prelude, in which a radio orchestra has to repeat the performance of a symphony because Stalin personally calls the station asking for a recording of the performance — which obviously had not been recorded before. If you like this film or liked how I described it, I recommend reading Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita.
Letter from an Unknwon Woman - Max Ophüls (1948)
If I had seen this film as a teenager, I'm sure it would have become a favourite. Sometimes, watching too many films or reading too many books makes you less susceptible to being impressed by things, and today it's very difficult to find a new favourite, even when there's potential. Letter from an Unknown Woman came very close, and I would like to watch it again many times. Based on a story by Stefan Zweig (a plus), the film is narrated through a letter that Lisa writes to pianist Stefan Brand, with whom she has been in love since she was a girl and he was her womanising neighbour. Lisa tells him the story of her life, up to the moment when their paths cross and then separate again. It's a beautiful but very sad film, so get your tissues ready.
La Dolce Vita - Federico Fellini (1960)
This was the first Fellini film I saw, and I confess it was a bit too much for me. It was clear that he is quite maximalist, and the three hours of this film ended up tiring me out. I could compare La Dolce Vita to a book like War and Peace, in terms of the number of characters, subplots, and, of course, its length. The film is somewhat episodic, that is, we watch the journalist Marcello in various somewhat disconnected situations (it is difficult to follow the passage of time, for example), but following a linear trajectory of decadence and pessimism. Some scenes stuck in my mind, but I feel I need to rewatch this film to really form an opinion about it.
8½ - Federico Fellini (1963)
Although it has the same maximalism as La Dolce Vita, I found this film more sophisticated than the other. Overall, it is more polished, even though it retains Fellini's drama and exaggeration. I really enjoyed 8½, especially the dream sequences — the opening scene with Marcello Mastroianni trapped inside the car is one of the best things I've ever seen in cinema; I was completely mesmerised. But for me, the highlight of the performance goes to Anouk Aimee, playing Mastroianni's wife (a film director who is Fellini's alter ego). As I said earlier, I love films about making films, and this one goes a little further: it's about the difficulty or impossibility of making the film you want to make. And that extends to other artistic media. I had a writing teacher who said that when you can't write, write about not being able to write, and apparently that's what Fellini did.
Only two things bothered me: it's an extremely chaotic film at times, very noisy, and I think Fellini exaggerated a little in this method to illustrate the director's lack of peace; but that's more a matter of taste. The other issue was the ending: I would have ended the film earlier, with a certain conversation on a deserted street, and not with that circus of actors. I understand the reason for this choice and, again, I think it's just a difference in style.
Memories of Murder - Bong Joon Ho (2003)
Rarely has a film left me so frustrated. How can so many mistakes be made in a murder investigation? I say this because it is based on a real case of serial murders that took place in South Korea, and which at the time the film was released remained unsolved (today the killer is in prison, but only because he turned himself in). It is an incredible thriller full of twists and turns, many moments of disgusting human behaviour, and great performances. But be aware that you will finish the film feeling angry.
MUSIC & PODCASTS
The Medici Family and Savonarola: a series - The Rest is History Podcast
That's right, another podcast series from The Rest is History. They're the best, what can I say? As the Renaissance is my favourite historical period, I couldn't leave this series out. I should warn you that it's a lot of information (and I've already forgotten half the details), but it's very interesting, and Savonarola is the worst kind of religious figure there is (it's worth explaining that I hate Martin Luther, and Savonarola was a kind of Catholic Luther). This reminds me of a novel by George Eliot titled Romola, set during this period, that has Savonarola as character... knowing Eliot, it will either be boring or very intriguing, there's no in between.

If you've been following me for a while, you may know that Frank O'Hara is one of my favourite poets. He has an album reading some of his poems available on Spotify, and I decided to make a playlist inspired by the poems and to accompany them as well. I thought it was rather creative of me, and I hope you discover some poems you like:
Flaming Pie (Archive Collection) - Paul McCartney (1997/2020)
Paul is my favourite Beatle, and every now and then I become obsessed with him again. I listened to several of his albums in June, but the main one was Flaming Pie. That album really made me happy during moments of melancholy, and this reissue with alternate recordings is well worth exploring. Favourite songs: Little Willow; Calico Skies; Young Boy; Flaming Pie; Souvenir; Broomstick; Looking for You.
I also loved The Phoenician Scheme! The beautiful colors and sets he creates always make it worth seeing his films at the theater. I just added Saneamento Básico and The Death of Stalin to my watch list - I've never heard of either of them but they both sound right up my alley.
I'm in an incredibly big reading slump right now. I have been reading the fellowship of the ring for about 6 months now.......
