Eu li mais livros esse ano do que em qualquer outro, 62 para ser exata, e fiquei me perguntando o que essa “conquista” significa. Diferentemente do que eu imaginava, não me causou nenhuma euforia, nem sensação de dever cumprido porque não foi algo que deliberadamente tentei atingir. Na verdade, eu tinha estipulado uma média de 35 livros para 2023. Engraçado pensar que mesmo lendo vários livros bons, dentre esses 60 pouquíssimos foram memoráveis, e me vi até esquecendo do que tinha lido.
Eu gosto de definir os anos pelos livros que li (2022 foi o ano de Guerra e Paz por exemplo), e minha intenção para 2023 era que fosse o ano de George Eliot, mas em certos momentos a presença dela ficou meio dissipada dentre tantas outras histórias, e acabou sendo o ano de ninguém em particular. Percebi que nos anos que li menos em quantidade eu pude me conectar melhor com as obras e me ver mais nos livros escolhidos em certos meses – lembro exatamente onde eu estava mentalmente quando passei duas semanas de novembro/2022 na companhia de Villette. Eu não lembro quem me fez companhia em abril deste ano.
Assim, uma das resoluções de 2024 é fazer o esforço intencional de ler menos e com mais calma, de escolher livros que realmente causem impacto me apresentando algo admiravelmente novo ou terrivelmente familiar. No meu instagram (@thesecretbookgram) postarei os projetos de leitura futuros, e espero que daqui a um ano eu possa dar um relato mais entusiasmado.
Vejamos 2023 em livros:
As Histórias Inglesas de Shakespeare
Vamos começar com o ponto alto do ano. Composta de oito peças, uma delas objeto do meu TCC, as Histórias Inglesas foram uma fonte de conforto inesperado por serem o equivalente Shakespeariano de uma série de livros de cavalaria, com sagas familiares e personagens recorrentes. Pude acompanhar o desenvolvimento de indivíduos tão queridos como se fossem amigos pessoais, e me apeguei muito a figuras como o Príncipe Hal, Falstaff, Talbot, Richard III, Hotspur, Rainha Margaret, Poins, e até o insuportável Richard II.
A emoção das batalhas, das traições e amizades, das conspirações e atos de nobreza, das dezenas de mortes e da incerteza política é marcada pela linguagem monumental de Shakespeare, e pude testemunhar seu crescimento como artista visto que as três partes de Henry VI foram, segundo algumas cronologias, as primeiras peças que ele escreveu, e Henry V, a última das oito peças históricas, foi feita aproximadamente um ano antes de Hamlet.
Em momentos diferentes ao longo do ano, eu pude contar com uma dessas peças para me alegrar, e talvez por isso eu nunca as esqueça. Eu memorizei o monólogo de Hal antes da batalha de Agincourt em Henry V porque encontrei um estranho consolo naquele momento de camaradagem entre homens prestes a lutar num cenário de absoluta desvantagem. Problemas envolvendo lealdade e memória sempre me atraem – acho que por isso O Senhor dos Anéis me pega tanto. A questão é que as palavras mais grandiosas de Shakespeare transcendem os contextos de suas peças, e genuinamente me tranquiliza poder recitar para mim mesma:
This story shall the good man tell his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the word,
But we in it shall be remembered –
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition…
Middlemarch e Adam Bede - George Eliot
Hoje, quando penso em George Eliot, eu penso em comunidade. Esse conceito foi uma das minhas obsessões do ano, especialmente porque vejo que um dos maiores problemas da modernidade é a falta de comunidade. Eliot faz um tipo de trabalho que demora para ser absorvido e apreciado, mas com o tempo, quanto mais pensa-se sobre, mais a admiração cresce.
A recompensa de ler Eliot é projetada para pessoas pacientes (ou como diria Virginia Woolf, para adultos), pois a satisfação não é imediata, e você sai da leitura com mais ponderação do que emoções. Nunca encontrei um autor que levasse seu leitor tão a sério e o guiasse por padrões tão altos. É um desafio que vale muito a pena.
Adam Bede (1859), primeiro romance da autora, é incrível e desde que o li em fevereiro não paro de pensar sobre. Me lembrou muito Anna Karenina (inclusive Tolstói o leu). O mais interessante é a intenção por trás do romance – porque definitivamente há uma filosofia por trás – que é revelada no ensaio de Eliot The Natural History of German Life e também no capítulo 17, no qual é feita uma interjeição autoral argumentando pelo retrato não idealizado da vida camponesa, buscando a beleza nos cantos mais simples e, a princípio, rudes.
Já Middlemarch (1870), a obra mais famosa e talvez mais bem feita de Eliot, foi uma leitura tão minuciosamente real que senti que morei naquela vila das Midlands por um tempo. É engraçado esse tipo de obra, que eu batizei de “livros casca de noz”, pois é como se ele abrangesse todo um universo completo e absoluto em suas páginas, que são como a casca que envolve o imenso mundo de Middlemarch. São tantos detalhes que é impossível conceber que aquele mundo faça parte do nosso ou a existência de outros além daquele. Middlemarch possibilita uma experiência única de simpatia (e não empatia, Eliot deixou bem claro a diferença) intelectual, com as dezenas de personagens diferentes interligados no grande repertório artístico, filosófico, teológico e científico da autora. É o tipo de livro infinito que posso reler pra sempre, encontrando coisas novas toda vez.
Em 2023 eu li 5 dos 7 romances de Eliot, e posso dizer com confiança que ela virou uma das minhas autoras favoritas.
Meridiano de Sangue - Cormac McCarthy
Não foi o melhor livro do ano, mas com certeza o mais impactante. Vez ou outra me pego pensando no kid ou no juiz, nos eventos cósmico-bíblicos que ocorreram no deserto, nas vítimas; é outra leitura “casca de noz” extremamente imersiva, só que muito mais desagradável. Não é um livro fácil tanto pelo tema quanto pela linguagem, mas quanto mais o tempo passa mais eu gosto dele. Os grandes livros geram comparações, e tal como faço inconscientemente com Anna Karenina, passei a comparar tudo que vejo com Meridiano de Sangue: enquanto eu assistia Killers of the Flower Moon eu estava traçando paralelos mentais com a obra de McCarthy; mesma coisa quando assisti The Night of the Hunter. Fico pensando no próprio autor, porque me admira muito alguém criar um personagem como o juiz, já que para mim ele parece uma criatura perene do imaginário popular, algo pertencente ao domínio público dos pesadelos.
Dubliners - James Joyce
Mais um livro que não foi embora da minha mente. Li em março e certos contos nunca me deixaram: Eveline e The Dead são meus favoritos. Eu tinha um pouco de receio com relação a James Joyce, mas eles foram todos embora. Eu sei que Dubliners é sua obra mais palatável, mas eu gostei tanto dessa coletânea que, por amor a ela, posso enfrentar qualquer coisa que o autor queira me dar – e assim em 2024 lerei Ulysses! Acho que o segredo para lidar com Joyce é não se preocupar muito com entender e “enjoy the ride”. Vamos deixar as leituras neuróticas no passado.
The Pursuit of Love - Nancy Mitford
Li esse livro num final de semana no qual eu estava muito, muito doente. Não conseguia comer nem levantar da cama e estava me sentindo completamente miserável. Eis que surge Nancy Mitford com o livro mais delicioso que eu já li para me tirar do fundo do poço. The Pursuit of Love consiste em: romance, humor, leveza, coming of age, Velha Inglaterra vs. Modernidade, críticas à aristocracia ao mesmo tempo que ficamos por dentro da vida glamurosa deles – enfim, todos os temas que mais me divertem. Esse é o tipo de livro que pode (e deve) ser lido anualmente sempre que os humores estiverem em decaída. Acho que Linda Radlett representa todas as garotas ao menos em uma fase da vida. Mesmo que não seja bom ser sempre uma Linda, todos nós podemos aprender um pouco com o otimismo e romantismo extremo dela.
Studies in the History of the Renaissance - Walter Pater
O melhor tipo de ensaio é aquele que, ao escolher um objeto específico para dissertar sobre, termina falando sobre temas universais. Este é o livro mais difícil que li esse ano, por conta da linguagem e da ambição do autor, ao tratar dos aspectos mais intangíveis e transcendentais da arte a partir de uma prosa altamente poética. Pater quer falar do sublime através do sublime. Aqui não há uma história da Renascença de fato, pois os ensaios não são objetivos nem analíticos – o autor introduz e emprega um tipo de crítica “impressionista” que ressalta impressão pessoal causada pelo objeto, em oposição à tradição crítica racionalista (e moralista) da Era Vitoriana.
Ele define o Renascimento como “aquele movimento no qual, de várias maneiras, a mente humana conquista para si um novo reino de sentimentos, sensações e pensamentos, não oposto, mas para além e independente do sistema espiritual até então efetivamente compreendido”. É mais um fenômeno ontológico do que histórico. O conceito de “Renascença” seria então um resgate à subjetividade diante de um ambiente apático e desconexo por conta de um excesso de racionalidade ou asceticismo.
Eu ainda preciso reler esse livro algumas vezes porque com certeza muita coisa passou batido por mim. Ainda assim, o prefácio e a conclusão são as coisas mais bonitas e inspiradoras que li esse ano; para pessoas como eu, é emocionante se ver nas palavras de Pater que coloca “o poder de ficar profundamente comovido com a presença de objetos bonitos” como sendo algo a se orgulhar. Numa sociedade blasé, é refrescante se sentir estimulado a ser sensível e exagerado.
O Nascimento da Tragédia - Friedrich Nietzsche
Passei muito tempo esse ano na companhia não tão agradável de Nietzsche. Para mim ele é como um tio excêntrico que briga com a televisão e odeia o Natal. Resumindo, ele é irritante, mas cativante. Para poder escrever meu ensaio sobre The Secret History, eu li boa parte da produção juvenil de Nietzsche – The Birth of Tragedy sendo seu primeiro livro publicado, o qual ele iria refutar quase que completamente anos depois. Apesar de eu não ter concordado com boa parte do que foi dito, eu aprendi bastante com esse livro e com certeza ele me apresentou novas perspectivas.
Diante da ideia pré-concebida de que toda e qualquer filosofia é muito difícil, o texto fluido e os argumentos claros de Nietzsche serviram para desmitificar. Ele não é nenhum Kant (li a Metafísica dos Costumes esse ano – não recomendo), e a paixão que ele tem pela cultura clássica é contagiante, o que ajuda muito a dar vida a um texto de não ficção. Meu conselho para pessoas que, como eu, adiam a leitura filosófica apesar do interesse é: procurem uma edição decente com uma boa tradução e notas, e leiam com calma, anotando num caderno o que cada capítulo ou tópico quer dizer. Abaixo vocês podem ver fotos do meu Commonplace Book, que usei para colocar minhas anotações explicando pra mim mesma o que Nietzsche quis dizer.
Acima de tudo essa leitura me proporcionou uma nova confiança intelectual; me sinto menos intimidada a testar novos filósofos, sociólogos, psicanalistas etc.
I've read more books this year than any other, 62 to be exact, and I've been wondering what this "achievement" means. Unlike what I imagined, it didn't give me any thrill or sense of accomplishment because it wasn't something I deliberately attempted to do. In fact, I had set myself an average of 35 books for 2023. It's funny to think that even though I read a lot of good books, very few of those 60 were memorable, and I even found myself forgetting what I'd read.
I like to define the years by the books I've read (2022 was the year of War and Peace, for example), and my intention for 2023 was that it would be the year of George Eliot, but at certain moments her presence was somewhat dissipated among so many other stories, and it ended up being the year of no one in particular. I realised that in the years I read less in quantity I was able to connect better with the works and see myself more in the books chosen in certain months - I remember exactly where I was mentally when I spent two weeks of November 2022 in Villette's company. I don't remember who kept me company in April this year.
So one of my 2024 resolutions is to make the intentional effort to read less and more slowly, to choose books that really make an impact by introducing me to something wonderfully new or terribly familiar. I'll be posting future reading projects on my Instagram (@thesecretbookgram), and I hope that in a year I'll be able to give a more enthusiastic account.
Without further ado, 2023 in books:
Shakespeare's English Histories
Let's start with the highlight of the year. Consisting of eight plays, one of which was the subject of my Final Thesis, the English Histories were an unexpected source of comfort as they are the Shakespearean equivalent of a chivalric book series, with family sagas and recurring characters. I was able to follow the development of such beloved individuals as if they were personal friends, and became very attached to figures like Prince Hal, Falstaff, Talbot, Richard III, Hotspur, Queen Margaret, Poins, and even the insufferable Richard II.
The excitement of battles, betrayals and friendships, conspiracies and acts of nobility, dozens of deaths and political uncertainty are marked by Shakespeare's monumental language, and I was able to witness his growth as an artist since the three parts of Henry VI were, according to some chronologies, the first plays he wrote, and Henry V (the last of the eight historical plays) was completed approximately a year before Hamlet.
At different times throughout the year, I could count on one of these plays to cheer me up, and perhaps that's why I'll never forget them. I memorised Hal's monologue before the battle of Agincourt in Henry V because I found a strange consolation in that moment of camaraderie between men about to fight at an absolute disadvantage. Issues of loyalty and memory always appeal to me - I think that's why The Lord of the Rings gets to me so much. The point is that Shakespeare's greatest words transcend the contexts of his plays, and it genuinely soothes me to recite them to myself:
This story shall the good man tell his son;

Middlemarch and Adam Bede - George Eliot
Nowadays, when I think of George Eliot, I think of community. This concept has been one of my obsessions of the year, especially since one of the biggest problems of modernity is the lack of community. Eliot does a kind of work that takes time to absorb and appreciate, but the more you think about it, the more your admiration grows.
The reward of reading Eliot is designed for patient people (or as Virginia Woolf would say, for grown-ups), because the satisfaction is not immediate, and one finishes her books with more pondering than emotion. I've never come across an author who takes his reader so seriously and guides him by such high standards. It's a challenge well worth taking on.
Adam Bede (1859), the author's first novel, is incredible and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I read it in February. It reminded me a lot of Anna Karenina (Tolstoy even read it). The most interesting thing is the intention behind the novel – as there is definitely a philosophy behind it – which is revealed in Eliot's essay The Natural History of German Life and also in infamous chapter 17, in which an authorial interjection is made arguing for a non-idealised portrayal of peasant life, looking for beauty in the simplest and, at first, coarsest corners.
As for Middlemarch (1870), Eliot's most famous and perhaps most accomplished work, it was so meticulously real that I felt like I lived in that Midland village for a while. Funny thing about this kind of work, which I've christened ‘nutshell books’, is it encompasses a complete and absolute universe in its pages, which, like the shell, envelops the immense world of Middlemarch. There are so many details that it's impossible to conceive of that world being part of ours or the existence of others besides it. Middlemarch offers a unique experience of intellectual sympathy (not empathy, Eliot made the difference very clear), with dozens of different characters intertwined in the author's great artistic, philosophical, theological and scientific repertoire. It's the kind of infinite book that I can reread forever, finding new things every time.
This year I read 5 of Eliot’s 7 novels, and I can confidently say she has become one of my favourite authors.
Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy
It wasn't the best book of the year, but it was certainly the most impressive. Every now and then I find myself thinking about the kid or the judge, the cosmic-biblical events that took place in the desert, the victims; it's another extremely immersive read, only much more unpleasant. It's not an easy book, either because of the subject matter or the language, but as time goes by the more I like it. Great books generate comparisons, and just as I unconsciously did with Anna Karenina, I started comparing everything I saw with Blood Meridian: while I was watching Killers of the Flower Moon I was drawing mental parallels with McCarthy's work; same thing when I watched The Night of the Hunter. I keep thinking about the author himself, because I marvel at someone creating a character like the judge, since to me he seems like a perennial creature of the popular imagination, something belonging to the public domain of nightmares.
Dubliners - James Joyce
Another book that stuck in my mind. I read it in February and certain stories have never left me: Eveline and The Dead are my favourites. I had a few concerns about James Joyce, but they're all gone now. I know that Dubliners is his most palatable work, but I enjoyed this collection so much that, for the love of it, I can tackle anything the author wants to give me - and so in 2024 I'll read Ulysses! I think the secret to dealing with Joyce is not to worry too much about understanding and to ‘enjoy the ride’. Let's leave neurotic reading in the past.
The Pursuit of Love - Nancy Mitford
I read this book on a weekend when I was desperately ill. I couldn't eat or get out of bed and I was feeling completely miserable. Then along comes Nancy Mitford with the most delicious book I've ever read to lift me out of the depths. The Pursuit of Love consists of: romance, humour, playfulness, coming of age, Old England vs. Modernity, criticism of the aristocracy while getting to know their glamorous lives - in short, all the themes that amuse me the most. This is the kind of book that can (and should) be read every year whenever you're feeling blue. I think Linda Radlett represents all girls at least at one stage in their lives. Even if it's not always good to be Linda, we can all learn a little from her optimism and extreme romanticism.
Studies in the History of the Renaissance - Walter Pater
The best kind of essay is one that, by choosing a specific object to discuss, ends up talking about universal themes. This is the most difficult book I've read this year, because of the author's language and ambition, as he deals with the most intangible and transcendental aspects of art through highly poetic prose. Pater wants to talk about the sublime through the sublime. There is no actual history of the Renaissance here, as the essays are neither objective nor analytical – the author introduces and employs a type of ‘impressionist’ criticism that emphasises the personal impression made by the object, as opposed to the rationalist (and moralist) critical tradition of the Victorian era.
He defines the Renaissance as ‘that movement in which, on various ways, the human mind wins for itself a new kingdom of feeling and sensation and thought, not opposed to but beyond and independent of the spiritual system then actually realised.’ It's more of an ontological phenomenon than a historical one. The concept of ‘Renaissance’ would then be a rescue of subjectivity in the face of an apathetic and disconnected environment due to an excess of rationality or asceticism.
I still need to re-read this book a few times because I'm sure a lot went through my head. Still, its preface and conclusion are the most beautiful and inspiring things I've read this year; for people like me, it's thrilling to see yourself in the words of Pater who puts ‘the power of being deeply moved by the presence of beautiful objects’ as something to be proud of. In a blasé society, it's refreshing to feel encouraged to be sensitive and exaggerated.
The Birth of Tragedy - Friedrich Nietzsche
I've spent a lot of time this year in the not-so-pleasant company of Nietzsche. To me, he's like an eccentric uncle who argues with the telly and hates Christmas. In short, he's annoying but endearing. In order to write my essay on The Secret History I read much of Nietzsche's youthful output – The Birth of Tragedy being his first published book, which he would almost completely refute years later. Although I didn't agree with much of what was said, I learnt a lot from this book and it certainly gave me new perspectives.
Faced with the preconceived idea that any philosophy is too difficult, Nietzsche's fluid text and clear arguments served to demystify it. He's no Kant (I read the Metaphysics of Morals this year – don't recommend it), and his passion for classical culture is contagious, which helps to bring a non-fiction text to life. My advice to people who, like me, postpone philosophical reading despite their interest is: look for a decent edition with a good translation and notes, and read it slowly, writing down in a notebook what each chapter or topic means. Above all, this reading has given me new intellectual confidence; I feel less intimidated to try out new philosophers, sociologists, psychoanalysts etc.
